Cinemablend found this awesome fan created poster for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, which is actually ten times better than the recently released character one-sheets (for the record I want to say that I loved the first teaser poster which was released at Comic Con a couple years ago). The poster was created by UK artist Mark Storey. You can check out more of his art on his Deviant Art profile page.

Terminator DVD Player
After we win the war against the machines, what are we going to do with all the endoskeleton remains? How about we make the skulls into a DVD player? A Japanese company made such a creation during the release of Terminator 3. Much like anything on the internet, the photos are circulating around the web years later. Too bad the player doesn’t have component out.

More Than Half of DVD Sales will be Blu-ray by 2012
Futuresource Consulting projecting that more than half of all DVD sales in the United States will be Blu-ray by the year 2012. I’m finding it harder and harder to believe that we’ll have hoverboards and flying cars just three years later.
Movie Review: Tropic Thunder
Caution: Spoilers everywhere.
Whatever. Tropic Thunder didn’t meet expectations. It’s not an abortion in a beard like Clone Wars, but it wimped out. For some reason—probably due to the red band trailer and months of exposure to incredibly positive buzz—many hoped Ben Stiller would redeem himself and categorically skewer the Ben Stiller who will soon make three more Night at the Museums, two more Fockers and four more Madagascars. And throw on another $100 million blockbuster where he plays the exfoliated clueless egomaniac who puckers and speaks fluent infant.
Vin Diesel to Direct Fast and the Furious Prequel
Vin Diesel revealed to ComingSoon that he is directing a 20-minute prequel to the fourth Fast and the Furious movie. Diesel will also star in the prequel alongside Michelle Rodriguez and Sung Kang. No word on how this will connect, if at all, with the earlier films or where it will be released. Maybe it will be included on a DVD re-release of “the original trilogy”. Chances are it can’t be worse than 2 Fast 2 Furious.
This isn’t Diesel’s first time in the director’s chair. He helmed and starred in a short film titled Strays, that was shown during the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. Steven Spielberg saw the short and decided to cast the actor in Saving Private Ryan, jump-starting his career. He tried his hand at directing one more time in a low-budget 1999 short film titled Multi-Facial. Diesel has since tried his hand at producing, at at one point was announced to helm and star in Hannibal the Conqueror, about the Carthaginian general who led an elephant-riding battalion across the Alps to attack Rome in the 3rd Century B.C.
Justin Lin’s Fast and Furious hits theaters on June 5th 2009.

Warner Bros Still Unsure About Superman Sequel
Variety’s Anne Thompson posted another update on the status of the next Superman film. Basically, no one knows. Warner Bros wants to make another movie, but weren’t happy with the last film. Bryan Singer is still technically attached, and has promised to go “Wrath of Khan” with the sequel, but I don’t think Warner wants a sequel. And a unnamed executive admitted that “it might be better to start from scratch.” It seems to me that we’re looking at the equivalent of a game of chicken, with neither the studio or Singer willing to move out of the way. The interesting sentence in Thompson’s update is this one: “Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project.”
Some have told me that Singer’s deal is that if he wasn’t brought back for the sequel, he would be paid for the work he would have done. I’m not sure if that is the case or not, and even if so, I’m not sure why Warner Bros is hesitating. Comic Book movies are hot right now, and they need to strike before the enviable downward turn hits. I was one of the few who liked Singer’s Superman Returns despite the flaws. However, It seems clear to me that people don’t want a sequel to Superman Returns, but they do want a Superman movie. It seems to me like the best thing to do is to hire a new director, and let Singer save face by bringing him on board as a producer. The new director can’t be George Miller, but someone young who will have a new take on the classic superhero. Hire Jonathan Nolan to write a script. Try to recapture the magic of The Dark Knight. After all, what would Superman look like in the Nolanverse?
Tom Cruise Teams With Sam Raimi on New Comic Book Adaptation
Tom Cruise is teaming up with Sam Raimi to develop an adaptation of the Wildstorm comic book Sleeper. Cruise might star, while Raimi will produce with Josh Donen.
Written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips, the story follows a covert “sleeper” operative named Holden Carver (aka The Conductor), who is fused with an alien artifact that makes him not only impervious to pain , but also able to pass it along to others through skin contact. Carver has been placed undercover in a villainous organization led by TAO (a WildC.A.T.s villain from Alan Moore’s run). But when the only guy who knows that he is an undercover agent goes into a coma, Carver must question right and wrong, as he falls and for a member of the group while rising through he ranks.
Aside from being a spin-off of WildC.A.T.s, Sleeper also features characters from Gen 13. Cruise’s involvement has put the project on the fast track. Warner Bros hopes to turn the project into a franchise. I haven’t read the series, but the synopsis certainly sounds interesting enough for the big screen. Sleeper placed #81 on Comic Book Resource’s top 100 comic book runs of all time.
Batmobile For Sale
The Batmobile from Batman Returns is being auctioned off at the 38th annual Kruse International Auction, which will be held on Labor Day weekend in Auburn, Indiana. The car is #3 of 5 Batmobiles actually used on screen during the film.
“Other less valuable non-movie promotional Batmobiles have sold for as much as $550,000.00! This authentic movie masterpiece is expected to bring a record price. The Warner Bros. & DC Comics sales approval agreement clearly authenticates that this is the number “3” “Movie” Batmobile. All interested Batmobile bidders should notify Kruse International 1- 800 968-4444 ASAP. This is your chance of a lifetime to become the owner of this awesome piece of movie history. More than $550,000? Yeah, that’s out of my price range. But you, millionaire /Film readers (I know you must be out there somewhere, right?), can learn more on Kruse.com.
Judge Won’t Dismiss Fox’s Watchmen Lawsuit
Earlier this year, 20th Century Fox filed a copy infringement and breach of contract lawsuit against Warner Bros over the big screen rights of the upcoming comic book adaptation Watchmen. Fox alleged that it had the “exclusive copyright and contract rights” to “produce and develop the picture and to distribute the work throughout the world.” When the story was first reported, many wrote it off as baseless. Even I assumed that it would be thrown out of court or quickly settled for a small amount of cash. WRONG.
Not only did the judge deny a motion by Warner Bros to dismiss the lawsuit, but according to Nikki Finke, he appeared to conclude that Fox actually retains the rights under a 1994 agreement with producer Larry Gordon. Of course, his opinion could change over the course of litigation, but this doesn’t look good for Warner Bros.
According to the suit, Fox acquired all motion picture rights to Watchmen through a series of contracts with the author, and subsequent screenplays by Charles McKeown and Sam Hamm. This has been certified by the U.S. Copyright Office. In 1994, Fox and producer Larry Gordon entered into an agreement that would require a buy-out payment if a Watchmen movie was ever produced, in addition for profit participation of 2.5 percent of 100 percent of net profits on any motion pictures that result (this includes sequels and spin-offs such as The Black Freighter). According to the lawsuit , neither Gordon nor Warner Bros has paid Fox the buy-out amount. Warner Bros insists that they have the sole rights to the project.
So what does this mean for the future of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen? I’m not a lawyer, so I really have no idea. The court is still considering Fox’s motion for an injunction to prevent the film from being distributed to theaters in March 2009. Who knows what will happen at the end of the day. Could Fox walk off with Zack Snyder’s film? I’m guessing the more likely scenario involved Warner Bros ponying up tens of millions of dollars, and possibly some back end points.
Paul W.S. Anderson Leaves Spy Hunter
A big screen adaptation of the video game Spy Hunter has been in the woks for almost five years now. Last year it was announced that Universal had hired hack director Paul W.S. Anderson (not to be confused with Paul Thomas Anderson) to helm the project, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson attached to star. Our friends at LatinoReview have some good news for video game fans - it looks like Anderson has lost interest in the film adaptation.
And with that, the current status of the project is now in flux. Is The Rock still going to do the movie? Will Universal Pictures even make the movie? Is a Spy Hunter movie even worth making? And if so, who will step up to helm it? Lets hope Uwe Boll isn’t on the short list. The answers to those questions and much more will be provided by you the /Film readers, in the comments.
Rosario Dawson’s Gemini DivisioRosario Dawson’s Gemini Division is Now Onlinen is Now Online
The first two episodes (or is it webisodes) of Rosario Dawson’s new web series, Gemini Division, are now online. It’s amazing what a talented/professional actress brings to the table. I have yet to really get involved with a web series the way I have television shows, partly because the quality of product is just so much lower. I’ve also found a problem with shows that move to slowly or try to play it off as the story is 100% real, which usually results in a mockumentary-level performance. While Gemini Division is shot and told through a female first-person confessional, like other popular web series (LonelyGirl), it is also presented in a more cinematic fashion.
Comprised of 50 three-minute episodes, the sci-fi thriller is set “five minutes in the future” about a New York City detective. Anna Diaz (Dawson), who realizes her fiance isn’t everything she thought he was. And the Gemini Division is an organization that has been formed to bring together a group of “renegade sims”, that were created for the Iraq war, but all of a sudden went AWOL and are rumored to be forming a secret terrorist cell. Much of the footage is shot on green screen, transporting the actors to locations and places they otherwise couldn’t afford. Truth is, they plan to shoot 150 minutes worth of content for only $1.75 million. You can check out the first two episodes on GeminiDivision.com or embedded below:
